The PI, Jack Stormâseriously, that was his nameâcalled me on the following Monday. "I have some interesting news for you," he said. "First of all, our mayor has been busy. His phone records show he's been in touch with Roly DaCosta several times over the last few months. Not only that, but Ingram has made some major purchases recently, all paid in cash. A new car for himself, another for his daughter and an overseas trip for his wife and her friends."
"Wow." I scribbled it all down. I was on Xpress time, sitting at my desk, so I tried to be discreet and keep it short. "Anything else?"
"He's meeting DaCosta again tonight."
"What for?"
"I don't know. I think there's someone else involved, but I don't know who."
"Where's the meeting?"
He gave me an address in Serendipity Bend. "Want me to tag along?"
"No, thanks," I said. "So how did you find out all this information?"
"Can't reveal my sources."
I rolled my eyes. "No problem. That's all for now. Send me your invoice and I'll pay it."
I hung up and stretched out my legs under the desk. Finally I was getting somewhere. I couldn't wait to tell Ryan, but I couldn't get hold of him. I even called his P.A., but didn't give my name. She said he was in meetings all afternoon. I hung up without giving a number for him to call back.
The afternoon wore on as I headed to a burnt out house on the outskirts of the city where five kittens had survived the fire. I got some photos of the kittens, being cared for by a local woman, photos of the blackened house, and some quotes from neighbors. It was a pleasant distraction from the Ingram case, and from Eliza too.
She'd called me again to vent about Barry. She sounded miserable, but nothing I said would convince her to leave him.
My article wasn't due until the following day and it was getting late so I headed straight to Serendipity Bend. I drove across the old stone bridge as the sun sank behind the mansions and tall trees. I rarely came to this part of the city and I admit to gawping at the lush hedges and trying to catch glimpses through the gates at the grand old homes beyond.
I drove around looking for somewhere to eat, but the suburb had only one restaurant and it was probably out of my budget. I gave up and parked in the street where Jack Storm said the meeting would take place. It was an ordinary residential street, or as ordinary as a street in Serendipity Bend could get. All looked quiet. Nobody was out walking, and only a handful of luxury cars drove past.
My phone beeped and a message from Ryan lit up the screen. Have to go out to dinner with advertiser. Meet after?
I texted back: Okay. Am on a stakeout in the Bend.
Be careful, he wrote. Don't confront anyone.
Yes, Boss.
Love it when you call me that.
I smiled and put the phone away.
